Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which is better -- aluminum or steel?

On smaller doors (ex. 8' x 7'), both metals are equivalent. For bigger doors (ex. 16' x 7'), the aluminum is lighter, which puts less stress on the hardware and electric operator over the lifetime of the door. The aluminum door is also non-ferrous and will never rust.

Q: Can I repaint my door?
Yes, you can. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Wash the surface with trisodium phosphate to remove grease and residue
  2. Rinse.
  3. Sand the surface with a light sandpaper.
  4. Clean the panel and let dry.
  5. Apply 2 coats of latex paint.
Please call Ram Doors for more details and complete painting instructions.

Q: Can I add windows in my existing Garage door?
Yes you can, but by adding windows you are changing the weight of the door. Therefore, the springs on the door must be replaced as well.

Q: Should I grease my garage door and when?
With every change of season, you should lube your door with a garage door lubricant. It helps reduce friction in hinges, rollers, bearings, chain and springs. The lube penetrates into critical areas and adheres to metal leaving a long lasting lubricant with strong protection against rust and corrosion. It is also a good idea to lube your weatherstripping with a special silicone lube. Both steps will insure you a long lasting door operation. We sell both of these great products.
