The door opener that raises and lowers your garage door generally employs one of two mechanisms: a metal‑reinforced rubber belt or a chain very similar to the one you'll find on your bicycle. Both systems function very well, although the chain‑driven type will require a bit more maintenance, as the chain will have to be oiled at least two times a year.

Just as it lifts 225 lb (100 kg) every time the door opens, it has to resist that same amount of weight every time the door closes.

Another system that must work correctly at all times is the emergency release mechanism. For example, if the power goes out and your garage door opener doesn’t have an emergency back‑up battery, in order to open and close your garage door, you'll have to go inside the garage and pull the red release cord.
