Should I insulate my non-insulated garage door?

Should I insulate my non-insulated garage door?

After looking for ways to make your garage more comfortable, you’ve settled on applying insulation to the walls and ceilings… Now that part of your project is over and you’re wondering what you should do about your garage door? It’s not insulated, so it seems like insulating the rest of the garage was a waste of time. Can you apply insulation to it yourself or do you need to invest in a new, well‑insulated garage door?

Well, the answer to your questions is yes and no…

You see, it is possible, you can apply either a mineral wool blanket (you’ll find kits at your local renovation or construction store), or polystyrene insulation panels. Insulating your non‑insulated garage door with one of these materials will set you back around $100, but DO NOT FORGET, polystyrene insulation panels are not flame retardant, so you will need to cover them with another fire‑resistant covering.

The thing with these options is, that although they won’t break the bank, they also won’t improve your level of thermal protection. There’s a simple reason behind this: Applying insulation to the interior of your garage door doesn’t change the fact that there is no thermal protection between door sections, therefore the cold, damp, humid and hot air will still creep into the garage.

Insulating the interior of your garage door will, however, reduce the empty metal sound that your non‑insulated garage door makes.

There are other insulation materials you could use, BUT

Again, these will not improve your insulation level, and you need to be extremely careful that these DO NOT add any extra weight to your garage door. Garage door systems are calibrated based on the total weight of the garage door, ensuring that the perceived weight of the door does not reach over 10 lbs. Therefore, if you add any extra weight to your garage door, the spring system will need to be recalibrated to reflect the new weight.

So, is there any point in spending that $100?

In a word, no.

Rather than spending $100 on a solution that isn’t even going to work, you’ll be much better off contacting a garage door specialist who understands the importance of quality products and quality installation, and investing in a new, well‑insulated garage door that will make your garage comfortable through the harsh, cold winters, and the hot, humid summers.
